gilbert arenas tonight turned himself in and began serving his sentence for taking guns onto the team's locker room. good evening, i'm jim vance.

>> i'm doreen gentzler. gilbert arenas arrived at the gilbert county detention center. he'll spend two days there before he is transferred to a halfway house. jackie bnson is at the detention center in rockville now with the story. >> reporter: the suspended nba star is now an inmate. basketball stargill berth arenas entered the montgomery county detention center at 7:40 p.m. montgomery county's contract with the federal bureau of prisons allows arenas to serve his 30-day halfway house sentence here. it starts with two days in jail. art walenstephen is the director. >> any prisoner coming in like this is processed, previewed, interviewed, checked out, check their mental health, health status, see how they're doing. they remain in custody the

better part of two days and then they are transported routinely without cuffs or anything else to our work release facility. >> reporter: after two days at the detention center, arenas will be taken to a halfway house and assigned to a 10 by 10 rule and have a curfew, do his own laundry. >> in our system they're very strict. it can involve tests for alcohol, drugs and attendance at groups. the normal things you would do in a tightly-controlled community correctional program. >> reporter: arenas received two years of probation, a $5,000 fine and 400 hours of community service which cannot be performed at basketball clinics. back to you. >> jackie benson reporting from rockville, thank you, jackie. there was a fire tonight in an apartment complex in hill crest heights in principles george's county. it started before 9:00.

darcy spencer is there with more on the story. >> reporter: initially there were reports of being trapped inside this burning building. i did speak to one resident who said there was a fire in the same building two weeks ago. he says some of the building alarms were not working properly tonight. that resident tells me people went door-to-door alerting neighbors to get out of the building. fire officials say the it appears the blaze started on the fourth floor then spread. there are seven stories to this building. all 96 units have been evacuated. fortunately there were no injuries reported. >> the fire alarm system has been isdisabled from the last fire. good-hearted people were knocking on their doors. i started to ignore it. wrong door, wrong apartment. something told me to look and see. i smelled the smoke and ran out.

>> i looked out the window and i saw flames. this guy was on the side. i said, is there a fire? he's like, yes, yes, get out, get out. i got out. >> it looked really bad. this is terrible. it's a friday night. i've been at school and work. long day, i want to home and go to bed. >> reporter: fire officials are here on the scene trying to figure out exactly what sparked the blaze. leaven from suitland, darcy spencer, news4. a metro access bus driver is facing charges for allegedly sexually assaulting a disabled passenger. transit police arrested 55-year-old jose del castillo yesterday. he's accused of assaulting a female passenger back in january. it happened at 6th street and brentwood in northeast d.c. castillo was suspended several

weeks later and fired upon his arrest. metro says he has passed their background checks before being hired. supreme court justice john paul stevens today announced his retirement effective in late june. justice stevens said it would be in the court's best interest to have his successor appointed by the next term in october. stevens has become known as a liberal leader on the bench, despite being appointed as a moderate conservative under president gerald ford. some law makers say president obama needs to choose a truly moderate candidate in order to get senate confirmation. >> if he will, he's going to go down in history as a better president. if he doesn't, there's going to be a whale of a fight. >> i will pick someone in the coming weeks with similar qualities. an independent mind, record of excellence and integrity, a fierce dedication to the rule of law. >> white house aides say the president is considering about ten people to replace justice

stevens, who will turn 90 this month. at the upper big branch mine in west virginia tonight, efforts are accelerating to find four miners who are still unaccounted for after monday's deadly explosion. west virginia's governor is promising a conclusion to the search by midnight. steve hands elelsman has the th story. >> reporter: are any of the four missing miners alive? >> we will know if we have that sliver of hope, that miracle and bring finality to this closure tonight. >> reporter: earlier rescue teams made it to the first of two shelters where survivors might have taken refuge. it was empty. no one inside as seen in this earlier animation. until that news, virginians held out hope, not anymore. miner allen cox, his face still

black from today's shift. >> it's heart wrenching. those guys are trying to feed their families the best way they can. >> reporter: rescuers and drilling teams that face terrible conditions of fire finally put out by nitrogen tonight. the huge explosion monday was known to have killed 25 men, 29 if the missing men aren't found in the second shelter. the funerals have started. husbands, fathers, mostly white, at least one black. members of the extended mining family hit by one of the worst disasters in u.s. mining history. president obama promised a quick investigation into why federal officials cited this mine for hundreds of safety violations, but didn't close it. the mine's owner massey energy denied putting the company's interest ahead of worker safety. coming up tonight, police

frontier airlines is facing a fine of nearly $400,000 for allegedly violating federal regulations. the carrier changed the way passengers can access some of the emergency exits in some of its planes. the faa says the placards were

not updated. 900 flights took place with the old placards. starting monday, drivers won't need to worry about carrying spare change when they park at some d.c. parking meters. the district department of transportation is testing a new pay-by-phone system offered at dupont system and union station and downtown the at the 900 block of new york avenue northwest. drivers first will have to register their phone, license plate and credit card numbers. when they're ready to park, they will call in with a location and tell the system how long they want to park. the system sends drivers a text message when their meter is expiring and they get the option of adding more time. driver safety and medical marijuana were among the bills passing big hurdles in the maryland legislature today. a ban on using hand-held cell phones while driving is now on 0

its way to governor martin o'malley's desk. that bill was overwhelmingly approved in the house today anded had been passed in the senate. first-time offenders would be fined $40. only six states and d.c. have similar laws. if it becomes law it would take effect in october. also today, maryland senators advanced a bill that would legalize marijuana for medicinal uses. the patients would need a prescription there a doctor who treated them for an ongoing condition. final vote is still necessary on that measure. the house is looking at a similar bill, but its version is not expected for final review until next year. still to come tonight on news4, child service officials are furious after an adopted parent sends a child back to his home country alone on a plane halfway around the world. tiger woods in 3-d.

a family in tennessee is under investigation for putting a boy on a plane by himself and sending him back to his native country. the boy had been adopted. the child was 7 years old and they put him on a one-way flight from the d.c. area to russia. there was a note attached to the child saying he was violent, had psychological problems. the boy had been with his adoptive family since september. that incident sparked outrage in russia. officials there have threatened to suspend all adoptions to the u.s. that's a move that could have an impact on about 1,500 american families. we may learn new details about what led to the impeachment of former illinois governor rod blagojevich. today a ferg judge said he may unseal a document with previously undisclosed notes

arlington. in the upper 40s in prince george's county. southern maryland is now upper 40s to near 50 degrees. we have also some winds that are still blustery. it even feels chillier than the 40s with the winds gusting to around 20 to 25 miles per hour. winds will go calm by later on tonight. these counties in blue, including augusta, rockingham, shenandoah and page are under a frost advisory. we had the warm conditions earlier this week. that led to an early start to the growing season. as a result of clear skies and light winds tonight, that could allow temperatures to drop to the low to mid 30s and upper 20s. in the mountains there could be temperatures in the upper 20s. pollen count remains high. it did improve with last night's rain, but still high. over the last six hours we have seen a few snow flurries in pennsylvania. cold air out of the north and

west. temperatures in the low to mid 30s. by dawn tomorrow, we'll be down into the 30s to near 40 degrees right around the metro area. farther to our west and north, around the blue ridge, shenandoah valley could have frost under k clear sky. by 9:00 should be in the 40s. tomorrow's forecast showing lots of sun. should be in the upper 50s by noon. average high this time of year 65. on sunday we should be warmer, morning lows in the mid 40s. afternoon highs climbing into the low 70s. we'll see clouds by the afternoon with a sunny start. few clouds sunday night as well as monday and tuesday. cooler monday and tuesday with a northeasterly breeze as high pressure moves in from the north. as we get into the balance of the week, looks like it will remain dry. lots of sun around wednesday. morning lows.

a man up in pennsylvania has been accused of stashing marijuana in his son's backpack, an elmo backpack. the child is in kindergarten. the father called the child's school yesterday and said he needed to get something from the backpack. school officials looked into the bag first and found almost four ounces of marijuana inside. police arrested the man. he's being held on $100,000 bond for possession, intent to distribute and other charges. a new study said people who use technology to casually spy on their lovers are probably in quite good company. 38% of people 25 and younger have looked at their significant other's text or e-mail conversations. that's according to a study commissioned by the gadget
